At Custom Self Storage, we have the best guide on plastic v cardboard boxes. However, many people can’t figure out the best way to pack their moving boxes. Well, we at Custom Self Storage have put together a list of what to pack in what size moving box. Hopefully, it helps some of you out there!
What to Pack?
Let’s be a bit general here, and go with small, medium and large cardboard moving boxes.
Small
Small boxes are great for light and small things, these things include:
- Laptops
- Game Consoles
- Household Cleaning Supplies
- Books
- Magazines
- Records
- Small Tools
- Fragile China
Medium
Medium boxes are perfect for a wide variety of things, big or small, but here is an example of what you should be packing into a medium-sized moving box.
- Photo Albums
- Kitchenware (Dishes, Utensils, Glasses etc)
- Small Appliances (Coffee makers, irons etc)
- CD/DVD Collections
- Footwear (Keep boots for bigger boxes)
- Toys
Large
Big boxes don’t mean heavy large items, these could break through the box and result in back injuries when packed too heavy. Keep big boxes for big and light items.
- Clothing
- Pillows, bedding, sheets and the like
- Lampshades
- Pots, pans, baking trays
- Larger toys
We hope this gives you a little insight into what you should be packing into your boxes. Note, this is for cardboard boxes. We recommend plastic boxes for things that are very fragile or delicate, as they offer more protection. Cardboard boxes are more affordable and if packed properly shouldn’t pose a problem.

I really like your idea to put important items such as a laptop or game console in a small box so it doesn’t get ruined. My sister is moving this weekend and needs to find a place to temporarily put her things. I think it’s a good idea to follow your tips while packing so that her long-term storage items aren’t ruined.
I’m planning on fitting a bunch of stuff in a storage unit, but I’m not sure how to do it. It makes sense that packing everything into boxes would be a good place to start! I’ll be sure to get a variety of different sizes of boxes. That way, I can ensure that there’s a box for everything.
It makes a lot of sense to put lighter items like clothing and towels into the bigger boxes. My spouse and I are moving this summer and we need to pack everything up in just a few weeks. I’ll try to find a storage unit nearby that we can put a lot of the boxes into until we are ready for them again.

I love your idea of putting lighter things in the big boxes so that it’s not a pain to move them. My brother is trying to pack up a lot of items so that he can clear out his garage. He needs to find a local storage space to put it into so that he can quickly access those items in the future.
It makes a lot of sense to put things like clothing into the larger boxes so they are much lighter to carry. My sister is trying to move out of her home this fall. She needs to make sure she is packing properly so that it’s an easy move and nothing gets damaged.
